Last week our own Cindy Morley wrote about the work U.S. Sens. Johnny Isakson (R-GA) and David Perdue (R-GA) are doing to secure much needed disaster relief funds for Georgia farmers impacted by Hurricane Michael.

A major part of their efforts included petitioning Housing and Urban Development Secretary Dr. Ben Carson to release HUD Disaster Relief Funds, totaling some $34.8 million.

On Tuesday HUD announced that it would in fact be awarding the near-$35 million to Georgia, helping cover some of the state’s infrastructure damage.  The news came as a bright spot in Isakson and Perdue’s continued efforts, which have been bogged down by partisan bickering in Washington D.C.

“This down payment will help Georgia communities struggling to rebuild infrastructure damaged by Hurricane Michael nearly seven months ago,” said Isakson. “I thank the administration for taking this step to provide funding to our state. Senator Perdue and I are going to continue fighting in Congress to see to it that we pass critical disaster relief funding for our farmers and other Georgians in desperate need.”

“President Trump and HUD Secretary Ben Carson are stepping up to help rebuild our communities in Southwest Georgia after Hurricane Michael devastated homes and businesses seven months ago,” said Perdue. “Now, Congress must put aside individual political interests and pass a disaster relief package for Americans who are depending on us. To our farmers in Georgia – rest assured Senator Isakson and I will continue fighting until we get disaster relief flowing to Georgia and all states that are hurting.”

Six other states impacted by natural disasters, including California, Florida, and Texas, will also receive disaster relief funding through the package.
