• Governor Deal Expands State of Emergency to include 108 Counties

  Acting on a recommendation from the state's Emergency Operations Command, Gov. Nathan Deal expanded the emergency declaration to an additional 16 counties. The state of emergency now includes 108 counties in Georgia.

• Georgia Shatters All-Time Voter Registration Record

  Secretary of State Brian Kemp announced that Georgia has shattered the all-time voter registration record with over 6,915,000 active and inactive voters on the rolls. Kemp expects the total number to break 7,000,000 voters at any moment as counties continue to process forms received by yesterday's deadline.

• Amazon Raises Minimum Wage to $15 for All U.S. Employees

  Amazon announced it is increasing its minimum wage to $15 for all full-time, part-time, temporary - including those hired by agencies, and seasonal employees across the U.S.—effective November 1st. The new Amazon $15 minimum wage will benefit more than 250,000 Amazon employees, as well as over 100,000 seasonal employees who will be hired at Amazon sites across the country this holiday.

• Former Commander of NSA Georgia to Lead Georgia Cyber Center

  Col. Eric Toler, former commander of NSA Georgia, has been named executive director of the Georgia Cyber Center. He will begin his new position on Oct. 1st. In his new role, Col. Toler will work with Augusta University, Augusta Technical College and Georgia Technology Authority executive stakeholders to define and execute the overall strategy, vision, mission and goals for the center’s programs and partnerships.

• Georgia Named Top State for Business for Fifth Consecutive Year

Nathan Deal announced that Georgia has been named the No. 1 state for business for the fifth year in a row by Area Development, a leading corporate site selection and facility planning publication.   At the Savannah State of the Port event, GPA Executive Director Griff Lynch thanked Governor Deal for his leadership and detailed GPA's 10-year, $2.5 billion plan to expand the capacity of the nation's fastest growing and single largest container terminal from 5.5 million twenty-foot equivalent unit containers to 8 million.

• Georgia's Graduation Rate Rises to All-Time High

  Georgia’s high school graduation rate increased again in 2018, rising to 81.6 percent from 80.6 percent in 2017. This is an all-time high for Georgia’s graduation rate since the state began using the adjusted cohort calculation now required by federal law. Seventy-four Georgia school districts recorded 2018 graduation rates at or above 90 percent.
