The Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) announces that Patria Brown, TCSG’s 2024 Dinah Culbreath Wayne Exceptional Adult Georgian in Literacy Education (EAGLE) Award winner, has been selected as the recipient of the Adult Learner of the Year Award by the Coalition on Adult Basic Education (COABE).

COABE’s Outstanding Adult Learner of the Year Award is given to a student who exemplifies extraordinary dedication to adult education, overcoming obstacles to pursue learning while demonstrating leadership and support for other adult learners. Patria’s story of resilience and determination in balancing her education with employment, family, and community responsibilities embodies the spirit of this award.

“Patria’s success demonstrates the power of adult education and its impact not only on individual lives, but on families and communities,” said TCSG Commissioner, Greg Dozier. “Her recognition on a national stage is well-deserved, and we are incredibly proud of her accomplishments.”

Patria is currently attending Chattahoochee Technical College, where she is pursuing an associate degree in Business Management. With a strong determination to build a successful career, she plans to pass the real estate pre-license exam and begin her journey in the real estate industry. Her goal is to become a real estate broker, combining her business expertise and passion for helping others achieve success in homeownership and investment opportunities.

"Patria’s achievement is a shining example of the power of adult education and the incredible potential within every learner," said TCSG Assistant Commissioner for Adult Education, Dr. Cayanna Good. "We are so proud of her perseverance, leadership, and dedication to lifting herself, her family, and others up. As she continues her education at Chattahoochee Technical College, she inspires countless others to pursue and attain their dreams. Seeing her recognized on this national stage is truly an honor."

Patria will be honored at a special awards ceremony during the 2025 COABE National Conference in Dallas, Texas. As part of this national recognition, she will receive a $2,000 award, with all expenses covered for her attendance, including travel, meals, and event registration.

COABE is a leading national organization committed to advancing adult education and literacy. Its mission includes promoting programs such as Adult Basic Education, Adult Secondary Education, English for Speakers of Other Languages, Family Literacy, Skills Development, and Workforce Development. The organization plays a vital role in supporting undereducated and disadvantaged adults in achieving their goals.

“As a staff member of the Cobb County Adult Education program, Patria is now motivating others to follow in her footsteps and complete their GED through her inspiring story and her commitment to continual growth,” said Cobb County School District Assistant Superintendent of Accountability, Grants, and Research, Dr. Ehsan Kattoula. “Patria’s success is a remarkable example of one person’s dedication to bettering themselves and others through education.”

Patria’s journey reflects TCSG’s mission to provide access to education and training that leads to meaningful careers and lifelong success. As she receives this national honor, her story will serve as an inspiration to thousands of adult learners across Georgia and beyond.
