Long gone are the days when men outnumbered women in the United States labor market. While men held almost 7 million more jobs than women in the early 1990s, today that workforce gender gap has closed completely, according to research from the Indeed Hiring Lab. In fact, as of a few months ago, women made up more than half of the workforce in America, with the rate of men’s employment declining over the years while the rate of women’s employment has increased. In addition, an analysis from the Center for American Progress found that working mothers with school-aged children represent the largest increase in labor force participation rates since the pandemic.

One factor driving this trend has been the growth of industries that are typically dominated by women, such as healthcare, where women represent nearly 80% of the workforce. The gender wage gap, however, has not seen much movement. A recent report from the Pew Research Center found that in 2024, women earned an average of 85% of what men did, up only slightly from 81% in 2003.
